Gluten ISN’T the Problem!

We all have heard a great deal about avoiding or reducing gluten. Many of my acupuncture patients have benefited by following gluten-free or gluten-reduced diets. Wheat is the major culprit. Research and individuals find that there can be an intolerance or sensitivity to gluten or an allergy to wheat (these are not all the same thing). Wheat is ubiquitous in our diet and the hybridization of it has made this intolerance/sensitivity/allergy issue more of an problem in modern times.

But what IF the answer is not avoiding/reducing gluten intake? That would make a lot of people’s lives much easier… and enjoyable. What if it is more related to deficiencies of nutrients? What IF it just means taking supplements and/or adding certain nutrient-rich foods in our diet?

In my food therapy sessions with patients, I incorporate the idea of a healthy and HEALED gut. Yes, gluten and wheat can inflame the gut but if we have the proper nutrients, the gut wouldn’t get inflamed in the first place. I do a lot of this work with patients and the article I’m posting a link to below supports this premise that it isn’t all about avoiding certain foods (although that may be needed initially). I, myself, have had the experience of overcoming adairy allergy. I now no longer avoid it and sometimes really go overboard with it without the negative effects.

In my full wellness-type packages I incorporate with the acupuncture treatments and herbal therapy a good bit of guidance on nutrition and food therapy.  We are often discussing the myths, misunderstandings and misconceptions about a lot of the nutritional information that is published.  I think the following article makes some good points.
